everyday food

Choose a variety of these different types of foods:

  • Vegetables and fruit
  • Milk and milk products (for example, yoghurt, cheese) and alternatives
  • Lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dried peas, beans and lentils
  • Breads, cereals, rice, pasta and noodles.

And drinks:

  • Water is the best drink. All plain water with nothing added is EVERYDAY.
  • Have plenty of water available every day.
  • Milk is also a great drink; serve milk after or between meals.
  • Serve whole milk to children aged 1–2 years.
  • Offer reduced- or low-fat milk to children from 2 years of age.

Everyday foods are the healthiest choices because, in general, they:

  • Are rich sources of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals
  • Contain less saturated fat and/or salt and/or added sugar
  • Help to prevent children consuming too many kilojoules (energy)
